
For fifty years, the little striped rectangle on the back of your product has done exactly one job: hold a number. Scan it, and the register knows what to charge. That is the entire contract between the UPC barcode and the retail world — and it is about to change.
GS1 Sunrise 2027 is the industry's coordinated move from 1D UPC barcodes to 2D barcodes — QR codes and GS1 DataMatrix — at retail checkout. By the end of December 2027, retailers are expected to have point-of-sale systems capable of scanning and processing a 2D barcode. For brand owners, that is not a deadline to dread. It is the first time in half a century that the most-scanned piece of real estate on your packaging can carry more than a price lookup.
If you sell physical products in the US — food, supplements, cosmetics, apparel, hardware — this is worth understanding now, while you still have room to plan rather than react.
There is a lot of noise around this transition, so here is the plain version.
For retailers: scanners and POS software need to read a 2D barcode and, at minimum, extract the GTIN — the same product number that lives in your UPC today. Over time, retailers will also process the extra data fields a 2D code can carry.
For brands: nothing forces you to remove your UPC in 2027. GS1's guidance is to add a 2D barcode alongside the existing UPC during the transition, so your product scans everywhere regardless of how far along a given retailer is. That dual-marking period is the safe path, and it is why starting early costs you very little.
Major retailers are already moving. Walmart is implementing, Tesco has run live trials on own-brand lines, and companies like Wegmans have publicly explored 2D for food traceability. Procter & Gamble's CEO has endorsed the global transition. The direction of travel is not in question — only your timing.
Most brands we talk to file Sunrise 2027 under "packaging chore." That framing costs them the actual opportunity.
A 2D barcode built to the GS1 Digital Link standard is simultaneously a checkout scan and a web address. One code, two audiences. The cashier's scanner reads the GTIN; a shopper's phone opens a page you control — and you can change what that page shows at any time without reprinting a single label.
A 2025 GS1 US consumer survey found that 79% of consumers are more likely to purchase a product with a scannable QR code that provides additional product information, 77% say product information matters when making a purchase, and 62% would spend more on a product that offers detailed information. That is a meaningful lift for something you were going to print anyway.

Because a 2D code can carry a serial number and batch data — not just a generic product identifier — every unit can be individually identifiable. That turns the barcode into the front door of an authentication system: a shopper, a retail partner, or a customs officer scans and gets a verified answer. Pair it with a serialization backend and you have a real defense against the diverted and counterfeit goods that quietly erode margin. This is the same architecture that underpins modern anti-counterfeiting software and broader brand protection platforms.
Batch and expiry data encoded at the item level means a recall can be scoped to the affected lots instead of the entire SKU. For food, supplements, and regulated categories, that difference is measured in millions of dollars and in trust you do not have to rebuild. It also lines up neatly with traceability rules US brands are already working through.
Every scan is a first-party touchpoint on a product someone already bought. Sourcing stories, allergen details, reorder links, warranty registration, sustainability data — delivered without renting attention from a platform.
Generating a compliant 2D barcode is close to trivial. What separates a brand that gets value from this and one that ships a dead link is everything sitting behind the scan.

None of this is exotic engineering. But it is engineering, and it needs an owner. Treating it as a packaging-vendor deliverable is the most common way this goes sideways.
GS1 US recommends a crawl-walk-run approach, and it maps well to how a lean team should actually sequence the work.
Audit your GTIN data for accuracy. If you already have marketing QR codes on packs, upgrade them to GS1 Digital Link syntax so they carry your GTIN — this is often the cheapest win available, because it turns decorative codes into functional ones. Add a 2D code alongside the UPC on your next packaging revision.
Encode additional data — batch, production or expiry dates, variant information — and connect it to the systems that need it. Stand up the resolver and a proper mobile destination. Pick one or two SKUs and instrument everything so you can see scan volume and behavior.
Layer on serialization, authentication, loyalty, and supply chain visibility. By this stage you are not chasing a deadline; you are running a product data platform that happens to satisfy one.
Off-the-shelf tools handle code generation and basic landing pages well. Where custom work usually earns its keep is the integration layer — connecting your ERP or PIM to the resolver, handling serialization at volume, enforcing authentication logic, and giving your team a dashboard that answers business questions rather than technical ones.
A sensible pattern: buy the commodity pieces, build the parts that are specific to your products, your supply chain, and your customer. Start with one product line, prove the scan-to-value loop, then scale. The same discipline applies here as to any new digital product — validate before you industrialize, which is the heart of good product development and go-to-market planning.
Sunrise 2027 is one of those rare industry shifts where the compliance floor and the commercial ceiling point in the same direction. Doing the minimum keeps you scanning at checkout. Doing it thoughtfully gives you authentication, traceability, and a direct line to the person holding your product.
