NFC stands for Near Field Communication, a short-range wireless technology closely related to RFID. In practice, a passive NFC chip is placed inside a hangtag, label, cap, or sewn-in badge. When a customer holds their smartphone within a few centimeters and taps, the phone reads the chip and opens a verification page confirming the product is genuine.
The experience matters as much as the security. Because modern iPhones and Android phones read NFC natively, there is usually no app to download and no account to create. Plenty of brands begin with a printed QR code, and for good reason: codes are cheap and every phone camera can read them. The trouble is that a printed QR code is static.
